Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC)

A valid driver's license is required to operate an automobile in the United States and in New Jersey. An international driver's license is valid for new residents of New Jersey only for the first 60 days in which you reside in this state. After 60 days of residence in New Jersey, you are required by state law to have a valid New Jersey driver's license to operate a vehicle here. If you purchase an automobile and you live in New Jersey you must immediately apply for a New Jersey driver's license.

International students and their families may apply for a New Jersey driver's license at any MVC office. To apply for a driver's license, proof of identification, a valid passport, I-94 card and I-20 or DS-2019 are required. A social security card is also required unless you are not eligible to obtain one. If you are ineligible for an SSN, you must obtain a letter from the Social Security Administration at 550 Jersey Avenue, Suite 200, New Brunswick, stating so.

Be sure to check the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission's website to make sure you bring all required items with you when applying for a license.
