Center for International Faculty and Student Services

Welcome Program

The Welcome Program introduces new international students to American friends/hosts who, in turn, volunteer to spend time with one or more new students on several occasions during the students' first year at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Some American friends/hosts prefer to host only one student, while others enjoy hosting two or even three students at the same time. In either case, the American friend/host introduces the new student(s) to American culture and customs, helps them become familiar with the campus and surrounding communities, and familiarizes them with local resources such as shopping areas, public transportation options, restaurants, etc. Time commitment depends on the schedules of both the friend/host and student participants; however a minimum of two meetings per semester is expected.

Individuals whose time constraints keep them from participating in the Welcome Program are encouraged to consider joining the Holiday Dinner Program and/or one of the English Conversation programs.
