IFP Membership Information and Application for International Students

We hope the following notes are helpful as you consider your participation in the Rutgers International Friendship Program. American friends/hosts usually find their experiences with international students to be very rewarding, educational and fun! We look forward to hearing from you and to your participation in the IFP.

When can I sign-up?
International Students can sign up for the IFP at any time during the year. However, we recommend that you join at the beginning of your first semester because first preference is given to new students when the IFP coordinator matches American participants with international students. During orientation week (August and January) you can attend the IFP introductory session in which you will receive valuable information about the program, get your questions answered, and complete required application materials.

How are Student/Host assignments arranged?
When we receive your application, and depending on your choice of program, the IFP coordinator will try, but cannot promise, to match international students with American friends/hosts who share similar interests and preferences. Your assigned friend/host will be given your name, e-mail address and a brief introduction, and will be asked to make the initial contact with you via e-mail. The coordinator will also give you your host's name a brief introduction.

How to stay in touch with my American friend/host?
Depending on which IFP program you choose, you will be able to keep in touch with your new friend(s) via telephone or e-mail, personal visits, meeting for tea/coffee on campus, etc. You might want to invite your new friend(s) to some of the many events that take place at the University.

What should I NOT expect from my American friends/hosts?
Although your new American friends are very enthusiastic about meeting you and are ready to help you adjust to a new culture and language, they are not expected to pay for your expenses or provide living accommodations. If you go out to dinner or attend an event that requires the purchase of tickets, you will be responsible for your own expenses unless your host offers to pay. Hosts are also not able to provide financial, visa, academic or medical assistance; for advice on these matters, please contact your international student adviser at the Center for International Faculty and Student Services.
